Title pretty much says it all.
I have a DISH VIP222k and noticed that it has a USB port on the back, and that it has just about every physical feature of a DVR except the internal hard drive and the specialized DVR software. I’ve heard rumors online that you can just connect a USB hard drive to it, and it will enable DVR functionality. Is this true?

I own a PS3 and love it's media streaming capabilities. I recently got rid of my AT&T Uverse to down grade my TV watching to save money and to not be a a slave to pay for what I can get for free (to an extent). I strictly use my PC's and my internet connection for all my media desires and want to know how to make it better.

hello, my dad and i have recently used my mom's old computer and wiped it clean of everything to make a run smoother. We wanted to make a homemade DVR or Media Server. We put in a tv tuner card which the model is a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR TV tuner card. we put that into the extra slot in the PC and hooked up the wires. i won't go into detail where the wires go until the bottom. I installed the Disk software and we scanned for channels. Only standard channels showed up such as 1-78 and 98. We are trying to get the HD channels to show up on the PC in case we want to record a show. Our set top box (STB) is a Motorola DCH3200 and its digital. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks

I have a laptop with HDMI output, and my TV obviously has HDMI also. Is there any way to watch/record TV on my computer without having a tv tuner? Can I, for example, hook up my cable box (time warner) to my laptop instead of hooking it up to the TV, and get essentially the same result (having the picture on the laptop instead of TV). Then, if that's possible, can I record the picture to my hard drive? What software would I need for this?
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm essentially trying to use my laptop as a DVR without having to buy a TV tuner.
