Need help connecting dvd player, satellite tv, home theater, and dvd player?

I am trying to connect an Onkyo ht-s5100 home theater, sony dvd player, DVP-NS700H, direct tv with dvr and an Lg 47lg70! I am new to hdmi nd all these other cables! I would like to connect everything to the onkyo receiver. Is this smart? Should I connect everything to the the tv? I have 4 hdmi ports on tv.

Satellite or cable which one is best?

We have insight cable and it is really expensive for what you get, but dish network has alot to offer for about half the price, and dish network includes dvr. We have tivo and that would cut that bill down. What is best?
